Curtain Specialist

STANDARD HOURS/WEEK: 40 (approximate), typically Monday-Friday during standard business hours; however, the schedule is largely dictated by client needs and may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, non-exempt

TRAVEL: Work will be primarily out of the branch, and occasionally at client locations, depending on client needs

JOB SUMMARY / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A to Z Theatrical Supply and Service, Inc. has been in continuous operation for over 40 years. As a service and supply company for the theatrical and events world, we handle a diverse client base and provide assistance with retail purchases, lighting audio and video system rentals or upgrades, custom costume construction and rentals, theatrical drapery construction and installation, theatrical rigging system inspections, repairs, and replacements, and are involved in the renovation and construction of theatrical spaces, primarily in schools and religious institutions. From A to Z, we do it all. The Curtain Specialist is primarily responsible for the fabrication and construction of stage curtains, drapes, cycloramas, and other fabric projects per project specifications. They are responsible for the accurate measuring and cutting of a variety of fabrics. All Curtain Shop employees are responsible for assisting with daily maintenance of the curtain department, as required, to maintain a clean and efficient working environment. This position is required to accurately report hours worked using the company time keeping system and to approve their time cards at the end of each pay period. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Prefer two years of full time professional experience stitching in a fast paced environment.
  • Able to use a single needle heavy duty industrial sewing machine.
  • Work with heavy velour, other fabrics and related soft goods.
  • Basic math skills required.

  • Excellent and accurate machine sewing, particularly when using a single-needle, heavy-duty, industrial sewing machine.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work enthusiastically with a wide range of individuals to foster productive partnerships and relationships.
  • Possess good judgment, sensitivity, analytical skills, and the ability to prioritize.
  • Must be tenacious, flexible, and able to “think on one’s feet.”
  • Ability to work without supervision and to make independent judgments, while adhering to all departmental processes and procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to be clear and concise via phone, email, and in person effectively interact with staff, and other departments.
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation required.
  • Able to safely load, unload, and transport event equipment using appropriate vehicles like box trucks and vans.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your hands, arms and legs, and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials for a prolonged period of time.
  • Must be able to operate industrial machinery with foot and/or knee pedals, feed fabric with fingers/hands, and descend and ascend stairs.
  • Able to perform all essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Able to work steadily at a computer for long periods of time.
  • A steady energy level, and a calm demeanor.
  • Able to operate hand, and power tools.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs with assistance.

  • Noise from multiple industrial sewing machines
